WHMA Wednesday News Update - WHMABIG95 Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson defeated Ross McGlaughn 65%-35%. After 20 years as Calhoun County Sheriff, Amerson simply thanked all of his many supporters. Amerson will face Democrat candidate Thomas Long. Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin defeated Russell A. Jones 73%-27%. This reporter talked to Entrekin Tuesday night as he was taking up all of his signs. He said that he had amazing support and thanked all of those who had worked and voted for him. Jim McClendon, a 12-year veteran of the Alabama House, defeated incumbent Jerry Fielding for the Republican nomination for Senate, District 11 Tuesday. McClendon received 63% of the vote. Former Congressman and state senator Parker Griffith, the retired physician from Huntsville, defeated Kevin Bass in the Democrat gubernatorial primary. One of the few Democrat races on the 2014 Primary ballot. Parker faces the incumbent governor and enormously popular Dr. Robert Bentley in November. Cynthia McCarty won the Republican nomination for State Board of Education District 6 Tuesday, topping Patricia McGriff. Incumbent Mary Scott Hunter defeated challenger Mike Parsons in the District 8 State Board of Education race earning her second term. Bob Fincher wins GOP nod for House District 37 in Randolph County, he will face Democrat Josh Burns. Incumbent Steve Hurst won his House District 35 seat outright and will return in November for a fifth term in office. Senator Del Marsh (R-Anniston) easily defeated Steven Guede 60%-40% Tuesday and will face Democrat Taylor Stewart for the District 12 seat in the Alabama Senate. Incumbent Representative Mack Butler (R, Rainbow City) handily defeated challenger Robert McKay, the mayor of Ashville, 57%-43% for House District 30. Butler returns to Montgomery as there is no Democrat opposition in November. There will be a run-off for Etowah County Commission District 4 as incumbent Jeff Overstreet led with 49% narrowly missing an outright win. Lana Bellew received 31%; Randall Green got 20%. Congressman Mike Rogers won his U.S. House District 3 race. The Anniston congressman defeated challenger Thomas Casson of Auburn Tuesday. Rogers will face Democrat Jesse Smith in November. Governor Robert Bentley easily defeated Stacy Lee George, a former Morgan County Commissioner, and retired software company owner Bob Starkey of Scottsboro. Bentley had nearly 90% of the vote. The popular governor will face Huntsville physician Parker Griffith in November. Longtime political veteran Gerald Dial (R, Lineville) overcame a strong challenge by Tim Sprayberry by just 416 votes out of more than 14,000 cast for Senate District 13. Dial will now turn his attention to Democrat Darrell Turner after Labor Day. Lee Patterson won the Calhoun County Commissioner District 5 outright Tuesday, beating four other candidates without a runoff, meanwhile, in District 1, incumbent Fred Wilson and James “Donald” Montgomery Sr. may need provisional ballots counted to know if they’ll meet in a runoff July 15th…standby… **** SPORTS! **** Ace pitcher Hannah Rogers didn’t start Game 2, but entered in the sixth inning with a lead. Rogers gave up one run in two innings and earned the save as the Gators defeated Alabama 6-3 on Tuesday night to sweep the best-of-three championship series. John Buck had three hits, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning that gave Seattle the lead, and the Mariners rallied to beat the Atlanta Braves 7-5 Tuesday night for their fourth straight win. Cleveland Browns running back Ben Tate said Tuesday that Johnny Manziel has received too much attention too soon in his career. Tate said if he were Manziel, hed be weary of the attention. Manziel has said he doesnt fully understand the attention.
