WHO CLIMBED EVEREST FIRST? It is commonly believed that New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay were the first to reach the top of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, which they did at 11.30 a.m. on May 29, 1953. However, this book, which I reviewed for the Weekend Post in 2012, suggests George Mallory may have got to the summit some 30 years earlier - but he didnt live to tell the tale. This superb book also takes in the horrors of World War 1 and the main factor which made the first attempts at scaling Everest possible: Britains desire to map the area.
