WHO IS THIS JESUS? WHO DO MEN SAY THAT I AM When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesaria Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I, the Son of man, am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. Matthew 16:13-17 The disciples answered that the general opinion of the public is that Jesus was John the Baptist incarnate, Elijah, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. But Jesus was no ordinary prophet. Even now, there are many people who call Jesus by a lot of other names. Some say He is a Grand Master, the Illuminated One, the Illustrious One, the Grand Teacher, etc. Some sects call Him a prophet, some call Him an Avatar. From the encounter Jesus had with His disciples at the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, it is obvious that Jesus Christ wants every of His disciples to know who the Son of man is. Many Christians, today, walk about without a clear knowledge of who the Lord is. Such Christians and followers get carried away when Jesus is described in all manner of flowery and grandiose language, without actually acknowledging the truth of whom He is. Once I was present in a gathering and the chairman of the occasion called on a respectable member of the audience to pray. The gentleman, in a very dignified, noble and charismatic manner, uttered some very eloquent words like- the master of the universe, the architect of the cosmos, the Great and Illustrious One, etc. But there was no mention of Jesus Christ. The prayer was said without acknowledging the Lordship of our Lord Jesus Christ over all creation. He did not acknowledge our Lord Jesus as the Son of God. Christians should be wary, sensitive and watch out for such error. There are many people who do not believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. As Jesus Himself said, if you do not belong to me, you are against me; you cannot belong to Him, when you do not believe that He is the Son of God. As He told Peter, flesh and blood cannot reveal Jesus to you as Christ, the Son of God. Only the Holy Spirit will. Any other name that you call Him or ascribe to Him derogates from who He is. If you do not believe in Him for whom He is, then you do not belong to His Kingdom. You belong to the other kingdom- the kingdom of darkness; the kingdom of Satan.
