WHO KILLED BASH? by Musa Lawan Kaga fcngamkura@gmail In three weeks, Bash could have been nineteen but his body rot quietly inside a hut. Who killed Bash? Bash was one of the best student in his school. He had a nine credit each in his WAEC and NECO. A very promising student, Bash had a dream. He wanted to become a medical doctor, build a large hospital in his hometown, Benishekh and assist all. Those were his dreams but flies now feast on his wasted body. Who killed Bash? There was an attack in Bashs village. Some gunmen invaded them and killed scores of people including Bashs father. Their houses were set ablaze and their food and livestocks carted away. Bashs father was slaughtered like a chicken in front of him and his mother. When one of the men dragged his mother into a waiting van, Bash pleaded with the men not to take his maa away. He clung to her feet, begging and crying. He was kicked in the chest by one of the men and Bash collapsed on the floor. Who killed Bash? Hours after the men had left, he was taken to the palace of the Village Head where other surviving villagers had gathered. Majority of them women and children. Cries, tears and smoke stirred the air. Bash leaned against a tree, coughing blood. The people were too shocked to notice him. Patiently, they waited for the Village Head who informed them that the Governor is on his way to their village. Who killed Bash? Bash could have been saved by a simple therapy but the absence of a single clinic in his village made matters worse. No electricity. No clean drinking water. No roads. Soon, the Governor arrived. He went round the village with tens security personnel who carried heavy machine guns. It frightened the villagers. The Governor came back to the palace to address the villagers. The Governor whom they have hoped would help them joined them in their cries. He wept. He asked them to remain calm; not to flee from their homes. He promised them millions of Naira. He promised them safety. He promised them food. He promised peace. And he left. The safety never came. Neither did the food nor peace; for there is no peace for a man with a empty stomach let alone women and children. The Naira and medics too never showed up. And the Governor? They only heard him on their tiny radios. And each time he spoke, he doesnt speak of Benisheikh and they gave up hope on him and his peace. His food and his Naira. The villagers searched for food and gathered the dead for a mass burial. Bash and his grandmother returned to their half burnt hut. There, he laid on the brown floor made of mud. Gradually, the world became distant to Bash. Bash died in the hut. He died. Died. Who killed Bash?
