WHO WAS MOST EVIL: GOD, SATAN, HITLER, OR JESUS? If asked who was most evil between God, Jesus, Satan and Hitler, most people would have some trouble deciding whether to put Hitler or Satan at the top of the list. I thought Id make my own list and, for simplicity, I would just count the number of people killed as the measure of evil. Hitler may not have killed anyone personally but people died as a result of his orders and policies. So, to make a fair comparison, I will count murders actually committed by the individual and those ordered by him. Killing by God God’s biggest single kill was the Genesis flood. Estimates for the population of the Earth at that time range from 20-30 million. There were many other slaughters of thousands of people. In addition, God ordered the Hebrews to slaughter people from other tribes. Rather than list all the killing here, you can go the dwindlinginunbelief blog where there is a comprehensive list. Find it here: dwindlinginunbelief.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/drunk-with-blood-gods-killings-in-bible.html This site estimates God’s kill at 25 million which is probably conservative. Killing by Satan By comparison with God, Satan was a pretty nice guy. He only killed 10 people and that was part of an argument with God and God invited him to do it (Job 1). Killing by Hitler Hitler was responsible for pogroms, ghettos and extermination camps. The best estimate for people murdered is just under 6 million—mostly Jews but including some Romany Gypsies. Hitler allowed other atrocities such as horrific medical experiments on prisoners but almost all of these victims eventually died or were killed and so are included in the 6 million total. Killing by Jesus It seems that in most respect Jesus was a nice guy. He did a lot to help people and I cannot find any examples of him killing anyone. But I think Jesus invented Hell. I can find no mention of Hell in the OT but it appears frequently in the NT. Hell is a place where non-believers go to be punished not with the intention of reforming them but just to make them suffer, forever. To allow punishment to continue after death and to inflict excruciating pain for time without limit may be the cruelest punishment ever conceived. It is true that Hell does not kill anybody but surely it causes much greater suffering than the most painful death. Hell will affect far more people than God ever managed to murder. It will affect all non-Christians and, according to which account you believe, some or most Christians too. We could expect tens of BILLIONS to suffer this barbaric fate. This will include a large number of children and people who have never heard of Christianity and so never had a chance. Conclusion If we look at the raw kill count the most evil would be God, Hitler, Satan and Jesus in that order. However, if we consider the sheer horror of Hell and the staggering number of humans who will suffer it, I would not hesitate to put Jesus at the top of the evil list. So my answer to the original question, in order of evil is: Jesus God Hitler Satan Surprised? So was I.
