WHO WOULD SPEND A NIGHT HERE .......? History and Haunting of : Hermitage Castle, (border region of)Scotland , U.K Photo by John Charlton stuartblakley.blogspot.co.uk/ Haunted Hermitage, Where long by spells mysterious bound, They pace their round with lifeless smile. And shake with restless foot the guilty pile, Till sink the mouldering towers beneath the burdened ground. The second ghost is that of Sir Alexander Ramsey, Sheriff of Tevitdale. In 1342, he was tricked by the then owner Sir William Douglas into visiting Hermitage Castle on the pretext of spending some quality time together. But Sir William had rather less hospitable ideas. The sheriff was unceremoniously dumped in a basement dungeon and left to die of starvation. In the 19th century, a mason demolished the sealed entrance to the dungeon and discovered a skeleton and a rusty sword. Heart-rending cries are said to be still heard echoing from the dungeon as dusk falls.
