WHO reports over 16,000 cases and nearly 7,000 deaths now, and continues to caution that these figures may be a significant underestimation. Numbers continue to rise slower in Liberia but faster in Sierra Leone, which is now in danger of catching up with Liberia. There were 600 new cases recorded this week. Of probable & confirmed cases with available data in Guinea, 99% have been hospitalized, & 80% of safe burial teams are in place. In Sierra Leone 40% of known cases are hospitalized, & in Liberia only 20%, while only 25% of needed burial teams are present in these two countries. In Liberia only Montserrado, Bomi, Bong, Grand Cape Mount, Grand Bassa, & Margibi Counties have currently reported new cases. Lofa has had none for 4 weeks. A device that can diagnose an Ebola infection within 15 minutes (6x faster than anything currently in use), by analyzing either blood or saliva, is about to begin experimental trials in Guinea. Mali reports 2 new cases this week (for a total of 8), with efforts to trace some 300 contacts in the Mali/Guinea border areas continuing.
