WHVY, 103.1 The Underground, was an amazing radio station that had a pretty great run here in Baltimore years ago. This was before the internet and all of the DJs there played music that you wouldnt hear anywhere else in the country. The music was hard rock & metal and we were also one of the first stations in the country to play bands like Pantera, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and Rage Against The Machine. (I remember interviewing Zach De La Rocha from Rage Against The Machine before most of the radio stations in the country were spinning their music. I dont think he did too many radio interviews after that. It was mostly other guys from the band. I was playing a lot of tracks off of their first album before Killing In The Name Of became a single. When the song did become their first single, one of the record label reps asked me to spin the track, so I asked my program director to bring the CD down to me. He gave me the unedited version of the song by mistake, so there was about 45 seconds of F-bombs that aired on the station. Years later, I was out to dinner with a group of people including the president of Epic Records, and when we were introduced, he said Oh The Underground, didnt you spin the unedited version of Killing In The Name Of? I did the 7PM-12MID show there and launched the Mandatory Metallica feature, a metal show called PowerZone and a local music show called Demo Traxx. I wish I would have been more organized with all of the photos and memorabilia from these years. I interviewed and had pictures with so many great bands, went to some amazing concerts and was given a ton of really cool rock n roll souvenirs. My one regret is not being better about preserving everything. These photos are of myself and my then program director Derek Allen on the night we launched the radio station on the air. I pressed the button to turn the radio station on the air at 11:58PM with the song Two Minutes To Midnight by Iron Maiden. Photo cred to Mars Hall
