WHY AM NOT A PATRIOT The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory - TopicsExpress

WHY AM NOT A PATRIOT The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said that they wont allow the new Generating Companies (GENCOS) and Distribution Companies (DISCOS) to EXPLOIT Nigerians. Just talk. Did Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) not said the same thing when the GSM companies were licensed to operate? What happened? Do we still not pay for calls we never made and text messages that were never delivered? And where is NCC? What have they done about it after so many years of bitter complaints and protests from subscribers? Do you now see why I don’t believe NERC? Besides, we have never done a successful privatization in Nigeria. Nigerian Airways, Ajaokuta Steel Complex, Nigerdock, Refineries, NITEL,…all of them failed. The TELECOM REVOLUTION we make so much noise about was not as a result of a successful privatization. No. The Federal Government (FG) just licensed GSM companies. In other words, the FG sold licenses to MTN and others. When the same FG wanted to privatize NITEL, it failed. Where is MTEL today? The case of the refineries is a classic example of crony capitalism. They sold licenses to themselves, their families, their friends and associates; people who have no technical expertise to run an oil refinery. AM SAYING THAT WE HAVE NEVER DONE A SUCCESSFUL PRIVATIZATION IN THIS COUNTRY. And I sincerely don’t think that the privatization of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) will be different. Instead of privatizing PHCN, the FG should have just sold licenses to GENCOS to build and operate power plant across the country and inject the resultant electricity into the National Grid. The FG shouldn’t have relinquished control over the distribution assets of PHCN. What they did was to create mini-monopolies called DISCOS that will fix tariffs arbitrarily. And as you know, I need not tell you, some people stand to gain from that mess. Unless a miracle happens this time around, the end of our power problems is not yet in sight.
