WHY ARE PEOPLE NARROW MINDED? Yes, we all experience that unpleasantness of narrow-mindedness (mostly in others) but what causes people to be that way? Is it that they are stupid and adled in the brain? Is it that they are selfish and do not care? Is it they harbor some fear? Or, is it something else? Before proceeding, I think it is important that I explain what I mean by narrow-minded. I would like to define it as a reluctance to consider ALL the consequences of some philosophy, theory, or proposed action. Why a person picks certain consequences to consider and leaves out others is the point to this OP. For example, in the State of Washington where I spend a lot of my summer, environmental laws that were recently passed largely through vote from city-folk in Seattle are killing business in the more rural areas. Yes, these laws save the environment. But, these laws also take food off the tables of the folks living outside Seattle who are struggling to find work and provide for their families. The city-folk dont seem to consider the economic pain these laws are causing to the rural folk. And, the rural folk are focused on the pain these laws are causing them. Another example would be minimum wage laws. Proponents seem to focus on the pain so many of our citizens are facing in earning a living wage. Opponents seem to focus on the harm that would be caused to small businesses that simply could not compete if they paid higher wages. My question here is why do people focus on certain consequences and ignore the others? What do you think?
