WHY CHANGU CHANGU STOVES Deforestation is one of the greatest - TopicsExpress

WHY CHANGU CHANGU STOVES Deforestation is one of the greatest issues facing Africa today. The effects of deforestation are tangible: less rain, hotter climates, soil erosion, and drought bring famine, poverty, and starvation. One of causes of deforestation is the high demand for wood used for cooking fires. In Malawi, 95% of the population use wood or charcoal for cooking every day, and almost 100% in rural areas! The Changu Changu Moto fuel-efficient cookstove reduces the demand on Malawi’s forests, as it uses up to 66% less wood than a traditional three-stone cooking fire. Just one Changu Changu Moto fuel-efficient cookstove will save hundreds of trees in its lifetime. (Imagine the savings if everyone in Malawi used one!) The Changu Changu Moto fuel-efficient clean cookstove is also important to healthcare. According to the World Health Organisation, 1.6 million people die prematurely from smoke inhalation every year — that’s more people than die of malaria! These effects are most poignant for women and children who spend most of their day around the fire. The Changu Changu Moto fuel-efficient clean cookstove reduces smoke inhalation as it produces substantially less smoke and is located at the side of the kitchen, keeping families out of the line of the smoke during their day-to-day activity. The Changu Changu Moto also reduces the chance of incurring serious burns: 60% of the families surveyed in our community said they had at least one family member who had suffered serious injury from clothes catching fire or from falling into a traditional three-stone fire. Lastly, the Changu Changu Moto fuel-efficient cookstove is important because it improves the quality of life for women in Malawi. Culturally, women in Malawi have a huge amount of responsibility, including the cooking and collecting of firewood. For a typical Malawian woman, collecting enough firewood for the family can require three or four separate trips each week, each trip taking between three to five hours! The Changu Changu Moto fuel-efficient cookstove reduces that labour by up to 10 hours per week, drastically improving the quality of life for women who have it quite tough as it is! Make your comments through in box so that we can talk further. Conservation of trees in Malawi is the responsibility of all of us so be part of this movement
