WHY DOES MY EMPLOYER CARE ABOUT MY LIFESTYLE AND FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE? I recently had a performance appraisal with my supervisor and he mentioned that the company was concerned about my financial discipline and lifestyle. I still cannot understand why a company should be concerned about my private life when my performance in not doubtful. Kindly help me understand. Answer I suppose you may not have been in a profession the days when companies that cared about how their employees project their dignity could go to the extent of defining the clubs that its employees were prescribed to join and to some extent the residential areas. The competitive environment saw this emphasis go for sometimes but now there is a rejuvenation of the significance of corporate image and to the extent of how the employees conduct themselves. You cannot underestimate the extent to which your lifestyle has an impact on the image of the company. It is a valuable consideration and ideally, no company should contract an employee that dopes mot subscribe fully to its mission and values. The complacency has made it common to have employees that do not know the values that their employers subscribe to. This is perhaps the circumstance that you are in. it feels right since what the company valued most in your recruitment is met by your current levels of performance. The company has the right to demand your compliance to the stated values and corporate projection. The common aspects in which employees misrepresent companies are like the entertainment habits, venues and modes; the networks that they belong to; and at times their aspects of lifestyles such as dressing, grooming. Employees showing up at work smelling liquor or worse off - cheap liquor; putting on clashing colours; or with poor grooming can be a disgrace to the company. The inclination to condemn poor projections is overwhelming but very few recognize that some corporate firms may not like to have their employees come out as if they are unreachable and too expensive. Take the aspect of lifestyle very seriously and I will not be surprised that it becomes a good ground for dismissal. Some company policies state this clearly. Financial discipline is often one aspect that many companies never mention as prominently. Every employer would wish to have the best impact out of the existing reward strategy. Anything that does not make this happen may as well be perceived as taking off a significant part of the reward. Employees living beyond their means and having unbalanced expenditure patterns are typical of such concerns. If you are always requesting for advances every month or the net after deductions cannot make you survive decently then, even your employer needs to be concerned. Employees whose income does not justify their lifestyles may be perceived to have their attention focused on other unknown for of income. Even with this realization, many employers are still not quite proactive in handling such issues as incoming influential staff that may lure others into very expensive lifestyles. An imaginary case is where; a single employee has bank loans, staff savings cooperative loans and company advances; that lead to a total deduction of less than 10% of the net income. Many companies have introduced conditions such as not salary advances or an loan approval systems that ensures that the payment deductions leave a significant income that can sustain the staff. Even with regard to your social security, many companies do not want to have your life ruined because of your dependence on employment.
