WHY HARYANA UNIVERSITIES ARE SO SUBSTANDARD Most of the Haryana universities have good infrastructure, grand mansions housing office complex, VC’s residence, good class rooms, world class auditorium, sport complex, hostels etc. However, academically they are hollow within. Main cause of the malaise is the appointment of Vice Chancellors in violation of University Grants Regulation which requires a VC to be a person of highest competence with a distinguished academic career with a minimum of 10 years experience as a university professors. There are instances of persons appointed as VCs who have never been to any university, leave alone done any research work….an assistant registrar, an engineer, an army officer, a college principal, a bureaucrat etc. The illegal and arbitrary appointment of VCs. Has played havoc with the Haryana universities where everything happens except meaningful teaching and research. The recruitment of teachers is generally arbitrary and partisan under political influence. I personally know some teachers in Haryana universities who cannot speak in the class room for ten minutes in any language, English or Hindi. They rarely go to classroom and draw fat salary. Three professors of MDU university Rohtak have filed a writ petition in the High Court. Let us hope that the intervention of the Court would set things right and apply a check on political masters.
