WHY IS THE PRESENT OF SO SHORT A DURATION? By HH Shri Bhola Nathji (1902-1992) great spiritual luminary of his time who founded the World Prayer Day for Peace. Why is the present of so short a duration? Why do the past and the future appear so vast? The future will always come. The long histories of the past will be with us, always. Why, then is the present so short that no sooner does it come than it passes? More instantaneous than the flash of lightning, is the present. We can divide the days into hours, and the hours into minutes and the minutes into seconds - and the seconds? Seconds can be divided into fractions one millionth and less. This is our present – that tiniest possible fraction of a second. In this present exist the stories of love and despair, of joy and sorrow. In this present exist thankfulness and thanklessness, gratitude and ingratitude, the material prosperity and the spiritual prosperity, and the desire for all these. In this present exist the tears of joy; in it, the flowers bloom and the dew falls on them. In it exists the life of man. O, conceive of it, this wonder! A drop of water is filled with storms, and the Sun reflects itself within this smallest of the small! The present is short so that man may realize his own insignificance, and know that the sorrows that haunt him in these short moments may appear to take on monstrous proportions but they are in fact very transient and fleeting. Let him detach himself from these moments of the present and become fearless.
