WHY IS THIS WORKSHOP IMPORTANT? --------------------------------------------------- In the US, last year, many people who are ‘above average’ user of the Internet spent more than $2,000 and countless hours trying to protect their privacy. Some of the items they purchased for example; — A service that encrypted their data in the Internet cloud; — A privacy filter to shield their laptop screen from coffee-shop voyeurs; — A subscription to a portable Internet service to bypass untrusted connections; a protection from criminals and hackers. — A monthly service that provides users with disposable email addresses and phone numbers, to protect them against the unfair ‘mining’ and sale of my personal data. In our data-saturated world, privacy is becoming a ‘luxury good’. In the Internet sphere, if you aren’t paying for the product, you are the product – and don’t take this lightly. You (i.e. your name, email address, other information) is being bought and sold without you knowing about it and there is nothing you can do about it. And since most are currently not paying for very much on the Internet or its technology, the ‘miners’ are having a field day. Not long ago, we would have bought services as important to us as mail and news. Now, however, we get all those services for free — and we pay with our personal data, which is spliced and diced and bought and sold. In this workshop, you will learn how to protect your personal data – if you care about it. You will learn everything there is to know about the ‘behind the scenes’ of social media and email services.
