WHY KAUAI SHOULD NOT VOTE FOR MAYOR CARVALHO!! Aloha, my name is Madison Strecker and my boyfriend is Chadry Pa we live on Kauai, Hawaii and this past February we brought into the world our beautiful son named Arrow. He has ten fingers, and ten toes, a perfect little smile and beautiful blue eyes. He brought us pure joy and happiness and is our saving grace. But Arrow did not have an easy start to life. He was born with a birth defect called Gastroschisis. He was born inside out, all of his intestines and his left testicle were outside of his body through a hole in the abdominal wall. Arrow spent his first three months in the NICU having six surgeries and multiple procedures. We didnt get to hold him in our arms until he was three weeks old and he did not get to eat until he was three months old. He was given nutrition through an IV for the first 3 months and developed an oral aversion from being traumatized by multiple tubes down his throat. He was poked by needles multiple times a day and was opiate dependent for several weeks. After three long months he was sent home with a G-Tube where he is given nutrition strait to his stomach through a feeding tube. We are beyond blessed to be home as a family and couldnt be happier that our son is doing well but we cant help but to think of the future generation of Kauai so I am hoping to share our story so that the island can know that if change isnt made, if we dont bring into office someone who cares about the aina, our families, our future generation, then we as a community are putting our families at risk. The birth defect my son was born with, Gastroschisis, is a birth defect has been directly linked by several scientist to PESTICIDE SPRAYING. Atrazine is a chemical sprayed by Syngenta, a company who sprays GMO crops on Kauai. THIS NEEDS TO STOP! Although it remains correlation for now, I want to make sure that other mothers know that these pesticides are dangerous and have been linked to birth defects.We are being exposed by the water we drink and the air we breath. And although I know that pesticide spraying isn’t the ‘only’ cause for gastroschisis I do believe in my heart that it is the reason for it becoming more prevalent here in Kauai. Stress hormones can cause immunosuppression and retarded growth and development and are stimulated by pesticides. The more pesticides you are exposed to the greater the stress hormone released and the greater effects you see. The pesticides itself are toxic and can wreck havoc on your endocrine system and indirectly cause defects on your baby. It is too late for my son Arrow, but it is not too late for future mothers and their babies. This goes for Maui too. I feel it is my duty to spread my story and hope that we can join together and vote for the GMO moratorium which will test for sure whether the combination of chemicals that they are spraying and ultimatley contaminating our water, air, land, and our bodies, are negatively impacting our health. My story is just one example and sadly will not be the last until it can be stopped. Mayor Carvalho vetoed bill 2491 that would create local regulations of genetically engineered crops and pesticides. Mayor Carvalho vetoed a bill that would begin to protect our families, our land, our water, our air, our OHANA. It is too late for my son Arrow, but to me I will do everything in my power to stop these big ag companies from poisoning our land, poisoning the air we breath, the water we drink, our families, our children, our island. Kauai needs to be the beautiful clean island it once was and if Mayor Carvalho wont protect us then it is up to us to bring into office someone who will. This is why my ohana will VOTE for Dustin Barca for Mayor 2014. A man who serves the island, serves his people, protect Kauais most vital resources. Barca emphasizes that the true wealth of Kauaʻi lies in our water, land and people, and that we are stewards of this `aina for many generations to come. Please when you vote tomorrow, vote for someone who will protect you and your ohana and the future generation. Please SHARE this if you know anyone on Kauai.
