WHY MANY GRADUATES ARE NOT GAINFULLY EMPLOYED BY PASTOR PAUL THOMPSON There is a statement credited to a Chinese which I will never forget and will consider to be an insult to my fellow country men that you can practically pick money on the streets of Nigeria but Nigerians are not seeing them because of their short sightedness. This statement may have been prompted by the prevailing circumstances of unemployment in the country which can be attributed to many factors. In this discourse, I will be looking at the various reasons why many graduates particularly are not gainfully employed not focusing on the government or employers of labour but on the graduates themselves. I believe one of the reasons why graduates are not gainfully employed is because of lack of creativity. Creativity is the mother of invention. Every invention is a product of creativity. The luxury cars we drive, the airplanes, the mobile phones, the clothes we were, even some kind of services rendered are products of creativity. Creativity we are told rules the world. When a man is creative, he becomes a master of his world. It is creativity that puts you in business. The word creativity means to create an activity. Where there is an activity one will definitely be busy and once you are busy you have a job. Our God is a creative God. In Genesis, the first book of the Bible, it was recorded that ...God created the heavens and the earth. God was busy creating the whole universe and on the seventh day he had to rest. This is to justify the fact that God gainfully employed Himself for six days and if He does there is no reason why anyone should not be creative so as to be a blessing to the whole world. God is the originator of the world. Creativity makes you an originator or an inventor. You cant be creative without the use of your mind. The mind is the center of creativity. It is the factory of where ideas are produced. In Genesis, we were told that a group of people had imagined to build a tower that will reach heaven and because of their resolve it was recorded that ...this they begin to do:and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. That is to say that imagination is a product of idea while creativity is the processing of the idea. If you are creative, people will be willing to pay dollars for your products. Your products may not necessarily be in terms of physical goods but services. Another reason why many graduates are not employed is because they are waiting for jobs that will make them put on coat and tie. That is what is commonly referred to as white collar jobs. They want to work in an office. If it is not forthcoming, they are not ready to work. So, they keep waiting and wasting. In Ecclesiastes 9:10, the bible says Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might... Anything you dont put to work is subject to depreciation. As a graduate, if the work you are expecting is not forthcoming, take the ones that are available now. You may not like the job of a gateman but if it is the one available for now do it. You may not like the job of a taxi driver but if it is the one available for now do it. You may not like hairdressing but if it is the one available for now do it and youll become gainfully employed. I read a testimony of a lady who just finished her National Youth Service in Signs and Wonders Today a publication of the Living Faith Church Worldwide recently. She said God told her specifically that hairdressing was her gift after she had enquired from Him and she swung into action immediately not minding her status as a graduate. Now, her business has opened up and instead of looking for where she will be employed, she is the one looking for people to employ. Thirdly, many do not want to start small because they see it as an humiliation. They are waiting to hit it big before they can start either a business or take up a particular job. Every big corporation today started small. Every CEO today started small too. Bishop David Oyedepo said : If you think you are too big for something small, then you are too small for something big. The church Winners Chapel International started with few members and today the membership is in millions. Scripturally, your beginning may be small but your latter end will surely increase. Do not under-rate that small salaried job or that small business rather invest the proceeds for something bigger. By so doing, you are preparing yourself for better future. The fourth reason is that many are still depending on their certificates to be gainfully employed. If you must secure a miracle job, you have to look beyond your certificate. Ask God to help you locate the unspeakable gift He has given to you to begin to live a profitable life. Finally, many are looking up to men hence their frustration and disappointment keep increasing by the day. Until you disconnect from all human connections and focus on God, you may never experience His move in your situation. Even though our prayers most often that not are conveyed through human vessels, it is not proper to focus on a particular person for the answer. Looking up to men is lack of confidence in God. It is my prayer that God will make all grace abound to you as you focus on Him for that miracle job you desire. Exceeding Grace!
