WHY THE OLIGARCHS HAVE WON The greatest achievement of the oligarchs has been the destruction of public faith and confidence in government. By castrating the government and rendering it hugely inefficient and ineffective, they not only created a power vacuum that they have moved into, but they also took away from the 99% the only instrument available to rectify the imbalance of power. Who but the federal government can step forward to protect the interests of the 99%, enforce rules of fair play and redress the imbalance of power? Yet, we find that a majority of Americans today distrust the government and have no confidence in its ability to do anything effectively. Even liberal Democrats who in the past brought us the New Deal, The Fair Deal and the Great Society, now routinely express suspicions about the federal government, applaud efforts to curtail its power and starve it of resources. They constantly talk of privatization and private-public partnerships, while instinctively supporting lower taxes. How they expect to accomplish their stated goals without the active engagement of the federal government is inexplicable. The distrust and disdain of government fostered by the oligarchs has also had an effect on the morale and competence of government. The lack of resources and cumbersome restrictions placed upon government administrators has diminished the ability to attract and retain talent, chained them to antiquated methods and procedures and generally reduced effectiveness. Before we can even begin to restore confidence and trust in government, we face the herculean task of reorganizing and reforming government bureaucracies, bringing their management and information tools up to the standards currently prevailing in the private sector.
