WHY THE PROBLEM OF RAMADAN MOON SIGHTING???.....Iam surprised with this years announcement of moon sighting, which was done, as I learnt, by one Professor Junaidu, on behalf of His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto. In fact, we were all awake up to around 12 mid night without any news from our local media, but only woke up and found some people in fasting. About 50% were said to be unware of the sighting. If I could recall, His Eminence, the Sultan, himself had made an official statement about 2 years ago that, if moon is not sighted around 8 pm to 9 pm, that translates the moon is never sighted. We always respect and follow the words of our leaders, and their statements as final and binding. But just imagine what happened this year! Secondly, as per as Ramadan moon sighting is concerned, the genarality our Muslims dont expect anybody to announce its sighting, but only his Eminence, the Sultan. Throughout my life, in the days of late Sultan Abubakar 111, nobody had ever announced any Ramadan moon sighting, but only himself. And even with Sultans Ibrahim Dasuki and Muhammadu Maccido. The rules and regulations of sighting Ramadan moon are stipulated in the holy books, and once they are met, then why the delay? With due respect to the Sultanate and our spiritual leaders generally, please let our Islamic rules and regulations be our guiding principles on this very sensitive issue.
