WHY WE ARE ESTABLISHING NEW POLYTECHNICS-EGHAGHA ASABA-DELTA State Commissioner for Higher Education Prof. Hope Eghagha has adduced reasons why the State Government is establishing additional four new polytechnics across the state. Prof. Eghagha disclosed this to newsmen during an interview at his office in Asaba. When the Ibori Administration established the three polytechnics and a College of Physical Education at Mosogar, people complained that they were too much and that Government wont be able to fund them effectively. But today they have stabilized and are now expanding and almost all their courses are accredited even new programs are being introduced and accredited According to Prof. Eghagha, Delta State Students are studying in over 160 institutions all over the country. It therefore means that there is a gap in both Polytechnic and University Education. In 2009, 25,000 Deltans applied for polytechnic education and only about 9,000 was admitted. Apart from bridging that gap the multiplier effect is uncommon. Properties can also be developed in those areas. It is true that the capital outlay is high, because of salaries, infrastructure etc. but it is also an avenue to develop those areas and the host communities are also doing well to encourage the opening of the institutions in their areas. The Bomadi Community has earmarked N50m for renovation of the take off site while the people of Aboh have also donated. The four new polytechnics located at Abigborodo, Aboh, Bomadi and Deghele are expected to commence academic activities in September, 2014.
