The purpose of this study is to explore the influences and motivations for second-hand shopping decisions and preferences, focusing on cultural and social, but also financial and environmental. Robyn Hobbs is a Masters student at Wilfrid Laurier University conducting research to complete the thesis requirements. INFORMATION Participants will complete the questionnaire on the provided iPad application which consists of socio-demographic questions, Likert scale questions, followed by questions regarding frequency, duration and amount spent in second-hand retail. The final portion of the survey will include an open-ended question about the participant’s style and will be asked to take an anonymous photo of the participant’s outfit with a whiteboard covering their face providing their identification number. The photos are not mandatory. They will be utilized only for analysis as added information on shopping patterns, personal fashion styles in regards to shopping preferences and social influences. The survey will require 10 minutes of participation. 200 participants will be participating in this research. RISKS The foreseeable discomforts are potential loss of status for participants being seen participating in a study on second-hand retail. Subjects may feel this is a marketing ploy rather than strictly research. The measures taken to minimize these risks will be to outline that the research is for as a retail study on people who do and do not shop for second-hand apparel. The researcher will be wearing Wilfrid Laurier University clothing to identify as a student conducting research. BENEFITS By participating, you are encouraging local entrepreneurship and growth. It will expand second-hand consumerism knowledge which can help promote sustainable consumerism, making a positive impact for the environment. CONFIDENTIALITY The confidentiality of participants will be ensured by assigned identification numbers for their survey and (optional) photograph. Robyn Hobbs and Dr. Sean Doherty (researcher’s supervisor) will have access to the data which will be stored on a secure network at surveymonkey.net and the researcher’s password protected computer.
