WILL CLIMATE CHANGE KILL THE GREAT BARRIER REEF? The detail in the recent GBR report card from GBRMPA states: Ultimately, the outlook for the Great Barrier Reef is likely to be determined by the concentration of greenhouse gases in the Earths atmosphere. Damage is already occurring as a result of climate change and the extreme weather events it triggers. If carbon dioxide concentrations reach 450 parts per million, scientists predict reefs will be in rapid and terminal decline worldwide. On current trends this level will be reached by about 2040. To ensure the Reef remains a coral-dominated system, the latest science indicates global average temperature rise would have to be limited to 1.2°C. If this isnt enough to make you seriously consider options to fossil fuels there is more detail at: gbrmpa.gov.au/managing-the-reef/strategic-assessment
