WILL CORRUPTION EVER STOP? by Tope Ojedele Though unwilling, but I decided to go home and pick some things for school. On getting to University of Lagoss Gate, hoping to board a bus going to Yaba, and thereafter board that of Iyana Ipaja at Underbridge; event turned out otherwise as I got Iyana Ipaja directly from Gate. I was not excited; because really I didnt want to go home, but a part of my sense appreciated it. However event turned around again, as another bus arrived and we were asked to vacate the bus we were already comfortable in and move into the just arrived rickety one. On asking for an explanation we were told the supposed driver of the former bus had been arrested by the police force. Some members of the bus cared to an extent as to asking what prompted that, but no explanation was given. We all grumbled as we alighted, and some people quickly passed insults to one another as they were all in a hurry to get the best seat in the rickety bus. That is the beginning of corruption- selfishness. And that was how we started our journey in the rickety bus; with a later discovery that its break is faulty, as the driver struggled in slowing down and stopping when necesssary. In fact, he bumped into a car and we were all scared to our anus- think I dropped a pee. Now that was where I began to think about how selfishness has eaten deep into the dermis of humans. When our driver- the bus driver rather- came down, we were proud of the fact that he was going to apologise to the owner of the car, and not choosing to speed off. But to our surprise, our driver went to check the bumper of his already dead bus, and seeing that nothing happened, smiled and jumped back into the bus. Then I wished the car was being owned by some of these retired soldiers who go about with whips; he would have been a proud owner of a lash on his idiotic face. It would be too much for me to forget that as this was going on, the supposed driver who was arrested by the police, drove the same bus we had initially boarded up beside us, giving our driver a face that says you were shouting it was your turn, and you took my passengers, but are we not on the same level now? All I could say in reply to that was na wa o. And while my mind was travelling around so many unreasonable stuffs, and coming back to the inglorious act of the driver, who still had a stupid grin on his face, for his selfish victory I suppose, my mind then concentrated on the conversations of three Master students at the back, who could have made a comfortable living from gists- dont need to tell u they were damn good at it. But one of the two guys would not settle for that if offered as somehow their gist moved from season movies to politics- wonder what Spartacus has in common with my oga at the top (just saying)-but somehow it did. But then the girl among them showed disgust for the misappropriation of money by politicians. However, one of the guys answered casually, as if saying hi to a pal, that if he gets to any political position, he would pack the money- with strong emphasis on pack. He stated a reason that if he wishes to be a saint and not practice corruption, people would still say something against him and find every means to flush him out. Hence that money he is trying to protect would be easily prepared for another to pack. Therefore, he would rather prefer that they all pack together. I would not try to be a saint by throwing his reasons to the air. Somehow he has a point. That is what we all feel- if I dont do it, another will and I would eventually lose on both sides. But then- God bless his soul- MJ asked that we should start from the man in the mirror- YOU. Hey dear, why dont you let the change start with you. Fine, I know nobody wants to be a matyr; the saint who loses it all. But then, a honest fellow never loses it all, never. A honest man never loses integrity; and trust me, that stands the test of time than any other reward. For example, a part of my sense listening to the gists of the trio, admired this supposed guy; because he seemed to know about everything, but then I was so disappointed at him for his mentality as regards corruption. My argument I know is too weak to even lighten the level at which corruption has eaten deep into humanity, but I know it would communicate to someone- just one person, that would later turn into a society. Remember, it begins with me, it begins with you; its up to us to make the world a better place. PEACE!
