WILL FORMALDEHYDE BE RE-CLASSIFIED? Various EU initiatives are seeking to tighten the hazardous classification of formaldehyde – thereby increasing the level of control required. The concerns centre around the potential carcinogenic (cancer causing effects). Historically formaldehyde was classed as category 2 (a suspected human carcinogen). In 2011, France proposed to classify formaldehyde as a category 1A substance (one that is known to have human carcinogenic properties. In Nov 2012, the EU regulatory body proposed to classify formaldehyde as carcinogen category 1B (suspected human carcinogen).
