WILSON MEMORIAL TOPS GLENVAR FOR FOURTH STATE TITLE IN GROUP A DIVISION II BASEBALL RADFORD, Va. – Wilson Memorial won its fourth overall state baseball title Sunday, and its first since 1990 with a 6-4 victory over Glenvar as part of the Virginia High School League’s 2013 Spring Jubilee. The Hornets never trailed and took the lead in the top of the second on an RBI fielder’s choice by Justin Leary. Leary then came in to score on a double by Thomas Goins as Wilson Memorial built a 2-0 edge. Wilson Memorial stretched the advantage to 4-0 win another pair of runs in the third. Hunter Carr walked to open the inning, and Daniel Poole singled to set up a two-run base hit by Brandon Gochenour. Glenvar, however, did not go easily. The Highlanders struck back for a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-1. Troy Mitchell drove in a run after Zack Duncan reached on a walk to open the inning and a Josh Watts single moved him into scoring position. The Hornets pushed across a run in the top of the fifth that pushed the lead to 5-1. Carr singled and came around to score on Poole’s sacrifice fly. That run proved crucial as Glenvar took advantage of two fielding miscues in the bottom of the fifth to score three runs and cut the lead to 5-4. Watts and Tyler DeHart both knocked in runs for the Highlanders, but they would get no closer. Poole added another RBI single in the sixth to provide the final margin for Wilson Memorial, 6-4. Poole started on the mound for the Hornets and worked 3.0 scoreless innings. Leary earned the victory for Wilson Memorial despite giving up four runs, two earned, after logging 4.0 innings in relief. Tyler Crockett started and took the loss on the mound for Glenvar. Wilson Memorial also won state titles in 1990, 1980, and 1977.
