WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE CITIZEN ONLINE CRIME REPORTING SYSTEM The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind citizens about the Service’s online reporting system. This initiative is part of the Service’s Strategic Plan 2012-2014 to improve public access to police processes through technological and electronic means. There are immediate benefits as citizens can avoid unnecessary travel and wait times and can file a report at any time using an Internet connection at home, at the office, or through a personal electronic device. Citizens may access online reporting through the Winnipeg Police Service webpage. Citizens are greeted with criteria and instructions for online reporting, and upon choosing a reportable occurrence, are guided through a series of steps to complete their report. Only non-violent incidents involving no suspects are reportable. Currently, the following occurrence categories are eligible for online reporting: -Damage to Property -Damage to Vehicle -Theft -Theft from Vehicle -Lost Property -Supplemental Reports The online reports are reviewed by police officers and entered in the records management system. The reports receive the same investigation and statistical analysis ability as if the report were entered traditionally. Online reporting also improves efficiencies within the Service. With online reporting, the data is entered by the citizen allowing officers to focus on higher priorities. Online reporting does not replace traditional reporting. It is simply an enhancement providing a new alternative for citizens. To date, there have been 1801 online reports received which have been entered into our records management system. We urge the public to view our webpage: winnipeg.ca/policeto learn more about this exciting initiative and to begin utilizing the system.
