WINTER WEATHER THREAT NEXT WEEK: Ive been so busy with the recent Arctic Blast I havent had time to say much about next week. Some of you have probably already heard that we are watching a couple (maybe three) chances for the possibility of winter weather. Chance number one will come Monday morning when temperatures will be near freezing. The concern on Monday will be for the threat of freezing rain. There will be cold air being pushed down from the northeast while warm and moisture (precipitation) rides up and over that cold air at the surface. While the probability of precipitation is around 40% the bigger question is how cold will surface temperatures be. If temperatures are at or below freezing Monday morning when rain begins to move in we may find some freezing rain across the area. Remember freezing rain is when it rains (liquid) and then freezes on contact. Even if we do see some freezing rain I dont anticipate there being a big impact. Some forecast models are suggesting we could see up to 0.20 of ice, but I think this is on the high end. The other main thing to watch is a system pulling out of the Gulf on Wednesday. Cold air will likely already be in place in the Triad as the center of a low pressure system tracks looks to track to our southeast. This would throw moisture our way and create a chance for some snow. One scenario suggests that we could see an initial onset of snow, followed by a period of freezing rain. Confidence is still very low in how this system evolves so I am hesitant to say anything more than we are watching it and keeping an eye on the trends of the forecast models. The third period to watch is Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. There is a very small chance of precipitation to begin with, but again we will be watching the temperatures from the surface to the upper levels to see if they will be cold enough to produce snow. Needless to say there is a lot of variability in the weather/forecast for next week and it will require continuous tweaking. So, keeping checking back for more updates on facebook, twitter (@grant_gilmore) and on WFMY News 2. Below are a few images of some of the forecast models this evening.
