WINTER WEATHER UPDATE FROM THE VIRGINIA WEATHER NETWORK TUESDAY JANUARY 13, 2015 2:45 PM WINTER WEATHER RETURNING TO THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION AND VIRGINIA STARTING THIS EVENING AND ENDING BY NOON WEDNESDAY. SYNOPSIS...A WEAK LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM THAT IS THE LAST IN A SERIES OF LOW PRESSURES WILL MOVE NORTHEAST TONIGHT FROM THE GULF COAST STATES TO OFF THE OUTER BANKS/VIRGINIA CAPES WILL BRING A MIX OF LIGHT TO SOME MODERATE PRECIPITATION TO OUR REGION. ALSO A COLD AIR DAMMING WEDGE HAS SET UP AGAIN ALONG AND EAST OF THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS THAT WILL KEEP COLD AIR IN PLACE AT THE SURFACE AND LOWER ATMOSPHERIC LEVELS WHICH WILL KEEP THE PRECIPITATION FROZEN OR WILL ALLOW ANY PRECIP. THAT FALLS TO THE GROUND TO FREEZE UPON CONTACT. THE MODELS CONTINUE TO SHOW A SHIELD OF LIGHT MOISTURE THAT WILL MOVE INTO THE REGION AND WITH THE COLDER AIR THAT IS IN PLACE WHICH SHOULD ALLOW SOME LIGHT TO MINOR SNOW/SLEET ACCUMULATIONS TO OCCUR MAINLY ALONG AND WEST OF INTERSTATE 95 TO THE THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS. AMOUNTS OF FROM A COATING TO UP TO AND INCH ARE POSSIBLE IN THE THESE AREAS SPECIFICALLY FROM THE EAST SIDE OF THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS TO WEST OF I-95. FROM JUST ALONG THE I-85/I-95 CORRIDORS TO ABOUT THE US-17 CORRIDOR, THERE WILL BE MORE OF MIX OF FREEZING RAIN/SLEET WITH ICE ACCUMULATIONS OF 1/4 INCH POSSIBLE. I have included MY first call map and is subject to change. This is my first call and not the first call of other VWN Team members. We will issue other maps through out the evening as we fine tune this forecast. With the colder temperatures in place, expect travel problems later this evening thru Weds for much of Virginia and North Carolina with NC picking up more ice than a mix. With all that said, I am not going to give any specifics as to how much will fall in your back yard as I have answered that already for most of you and I dont expect this forecast to change too much. But here are some locations that I will give specifics to: 1. DC/Northern VA suburbs along I-66 (Fairfax/Manassas) to Winchester Light Snow/Sleet with a coating to 1/2 inch 2. Southside DC suburbs along I-95 and south of I-66 (Woodbridge/Quantico) to just north of Richmond (Ashland/Doswell/Caroline/Fredericksburg) Snow/Sleet/Freezing Rain mix with around 1/2 inch sleet accumulation possible. 3. Metro Richmond and south of the James (Midlothian/Chester) along 95 to Petersburg and points east to Williamsburg Sleet/Freezing Rain with 1/4 inch accumulation 4. West of 95/West of Richmond (Farmville/Goochland/Louisa/Amelia/Powhatan/Fluvanna/Dillwyn) Snow/Sleet/Freezing Rain mix with up to an 1/2 inch accumulation. This included the US 460 corridor from west of Dinwiddie all the way to Farmville 5. US 29 Corridor to east side of Blue Ridge Mountains (from Lynchburg/Amherst/Charlottesville/Culpeper) Snow/Sleet mix with an inch or so accumulation 6. US 29 south of Lynchburg/US 360 from Keysville to Danville Sleet/Freezing Rain with up to 1/4 - 1/2 inch ice accumulation likely some snow mixing in. 7. The Valley from the NRV/Roanoke/Floyd up 81 to Winchester...SNOW SLEET MIX with up to a half inch or so accumulation. 8. Southwest VA from along I-77 west to KY chance of a flurry with little or no accumulation. We will another update shortly from the VWN Team... -Quags
