WLA has produced the first in a series of video interviews and podcasts! It only took me TWO WHOLE DAYS to figure out the software. I think its appropriate that the subject has to do with women in tech. Randi Cruz, Laura Weiderhaft, Natali Hall, and Luke Irvin competed in NWA Startup Weekend. Randis idea was selected to move on to the finals, so she created this team to develop Techne (techneapp). Hear more about the experience, tech in Arkansas, and women in tech here: youtu.be/tvqfSuTqMuo The following is from an email exchange, and it demonstrates why Randi Cruz is a Woman Leading Arkansas: You originally asked me “why women” and “why tech,” and I must admit that the first answer that came to my mind was—why not women, why not tech? The IT occupational field is growing at 4 times the rate of another other occupations. The IT field is a great space for women to thrive. One of my favorite quotes is by Donna Harraway where she claims, “I would rather be a cyborg than a goddess.” And while I’m certainly not a “cyborg,” my computer—as a learning, coding, designing, and development tool—is a integral part of who I am, and that sense of strength and empowerment that I get from that skill set offers a revolutionary potential for other women. Tech fields provide women with the resources they need to turn their creative visions into practical and tangible designs; they also provide women with supportive networks they can rely on as they learn to navigate the diverse ways of imagining themselves within their communities and the larger digital world.
