WNEU Offers Insight On Domestic Violence Controversy SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The domestic violence controversy plaguing the NFL has sparked a national debate on how the football league handles its players behavior. On Wednesday, Western New England University held a discussion about the issue to offer some insight on the subject. “Highly publicized incidents of domestic violence involving an NFL player has sort-of captured the public’s attention, (its) been the reason for heightened awareness of the issue of domestic violence more generally, but in particular its relation to professional sports and to the NFL,” said Professor of Law Erin Buzuvis. The discussion focused on informing students about the issues separately and how they relate to each other. “I actually think that there is good reason to talk about those issues together part because of the special social significance that the institution of sport has and its relationship to informing how we think about gender roles,” said Buzuvis. In early September, TMZ released footage of Baltimore Ravens star Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee and then dragging her across an elevator floor. Originally, Rice received a two-game suspension. It’s a sensitive issue that is much bigger than the NFL. For some students at Western New England University, the solution begins with education. “Stuff like this is very informative, so they should have more of it out there to open people’s eyes to it to show that it’s actually really a problem,” said Iris Cabrera. The discussion welcomed students who care about gender issues as well as those who care about sport issues. These are two different contexts brought together by one topic. Among NFL players, domestic violence accounts for 48% of arrests for violent crimes. This is compared to an estimated 21% nationally.
