WNZ Update 8 (Links are in email version, so if you want the links please contact me to be put on database) Hi everyone, The 2014 AWA Prize giving and end of season party was on Thursday with over $3,300 worth of prizes ($2000 of spot prizes & $1,300 for AWA Slalom Series - thanks to Barfoot & Thompson Whangaparoa). There were some great prizes, heres just a few that I can remember. High quality Slalom fin bags (Epic Surf - David Blake ), The Kite and Windsurfing Guide, Europe (AND Distribution Ltd), a wicked Starboard Windsurfing Poncho (NZ BOARDSTORE), a dry top/jacket (NZ Sailing/Watersports), Meanline Fins T-Shirts, a 1hour lesson at AUCKLAND WINDSURFING SCHOOL, 1hour lesson at MadLoop, $145 voucher at Hair&Bodybliss plus many more spot prizes from each sponsor! Here are the top 5 for the Gold and Silver Fleet. Gold 1st: Laurence Carey (Starboard, North Sails, Meanline fins, Gatorade, BTS Gym, Team10) 2nd: Tim Woods (Tabou, GA Sails) 3rd: David Law 4th: Harry Reed (Norths Sails, Carbon Art, Meanline Fins, Team10) 5th: Anton Blijlevens (North Sails, Carbon Art) Silver 1st: Chris Bolt (GA Sails, Tabou) 2nd: David Blake (Simmer Sails) 3rd: Bernard Carey (Starboard, North Sails, Meanline) 4th: Richard Faire 5th: Ropata Marshall The Wellington Windsurfing Association (WWA) had a very successful film evening with some local shorts followed by Andre Paskowskis Below the surface. Alex Dean also set a record by shepherding the AGM through in about 3 minutes! Esteban Funes was elected the new President of WWA and immediately organised a very successful get together with bonfire at Princess Bay on the south coast. WWA has been awarded funding by the Eastbourne Community Board to install an HD web cam and a wind meter at Robinson Bay (location of the slalom event last year), and other projects are in train for the area. Expect another slalom event to be announced soon. Meanwhile sailing and paddling (on the quiet days) continues, with James Court and friends scoring some epic sailing on the Wairarapa coast. Simon Croft has purchased the Wild Winds windsurfing school and will continue to operate it in conjunction with Wellington Ocean Sports. At a national level, windsurfing schools and instructors will need to come to terms with the Adventure Activities requirements which could be a challenge to the smaller operators - the onus for instructing may fall on the clubs in areas where the local instructors cannot afford to meet the compliance requirements. More to follow, but contact Bruce Spedding if you have concerns. The Maui Race Series has kicked off and all the big boys are out training. The next event is the Meanline Fins Race Day (July 5th) as they often have a slightly longer final leg. I will keep you updated with the results from it and how everyone goes. There are a few kiwis in Maui already (Annie Crombie & captain Terry) so we could hopefully see a few results from them. Click here for a video of the last race day. A few weeks back I told everyone that Flying Forwards Windsurfing School was for sale. I am happy to say he has managed to sell the school to Mike Pasco (NZ Sailing). Mike has a huge passion for growing the sport, especially the youth. So it will be great to see a windsurfing school still up in Manly teaching all the groms(young and old). The most recent PWA event has been Bonaire. With some epic conditions there have been some gnarley crashes and also some epic moves. Overall Results PWA Bonaire World Cup - Freestyle 1st Kiri Thode (Starboard / GA Sails) 2nd Steven Van Broeckhoven (JP / NeilPryde) 3rd Amado Vrieswijk (Starboard / Severne) 4th Tonky Frans (Tabou / GA Sails) 5th Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North / MFC) Results After Women’s Single Elimination II - Freestyle 1st Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Mystic / Chris Benz / Maui Ultra Fins) 2nd Maaike Huvermann (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) 3rd Arrianne Aukes (RRD / Simmer / Maui Ultra Fins) Also just to let everyone know there will be a PWA event in New Calledonia in November. It is a close event which means fligts will be cheap (around $800-900). I will be going but it would be great to have a few others Kiwis competing also. As it is the PWA make sure you have PWA registered boards and sails if you are considering applying for entry. The Aussie Slalom nationals were last week also. Unfortunately there was no true kiwis competing but Click Here for the results. It looks like a great event with freestyle, free race and slalom! One of the days was around 35knots, but as it is run under class 22 rules (everyone only registered 2 boards and 2 sails) it made sailing on 7.0s very exciting.
