Significant fall storm to affect Northern Ontario Sunday into Monday. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==discussion== A low pressure system is expected to develop over the Central United States this weekend and rapidly intensify as it heads towards Lake Superior later on Sunday. The weather system should eventually move into Quebec late in the day on Monday or Tuesday. Over most of Northeastern Ontario, current indications suggest that a few rounds of rain are possible beginning Saturday evening and lasting into Monday along with temperatures several degrees above normal. The rainfall could be heavy at times with significant amounts possible. Temperatures will rapidly fall early Monday as gusty winds and much colder air move into the region with rain changing to snow. However, snowfall accumulations are not expected to be significant. Farther to the west including regions north of Lake Superior, temperatures may be sufficiently cold that a significant snowfall is possible later Sunday into Monday. Such storm systems frequently produce snowfalls in excess of 15 centimetres. However, if the temperatures are slightly warmer than currently expected, most of the precipitation would fall in the form of rain in which case lesser snowfall accumulations would occur. There is considerable uncertainty with regards to the exact track and strength of this low pressure system. As a result, it is still too early to say exactly which regions will be affected and how much precipitation will fall. Additional statements will be issued as the event draws nearer.
