WOMEN IN KNITTING Casey Jenkins - The Vaginal Knitter - Craftivism I know, I know. Please dont shoot the messenger. :P Its really my goal to present a well rounded view of whats happening in the world of knitting. Some youll like, some you wont. My apologies in advance. This art performance is an example of a CRAFTIVIST movement piece. This performance art piece created a LOT of buzz this time last year when Caseys one woman performance exhibit hit the press. There was a lot of criticism but it did generate a great deal of discussion about womens issues. Which was one of her reasons for doing it. For those who dont know who Casey Jenkins is or what she did in the name of feminism here it goes. Casey Jenkins is a female performance artist in Melbourne, Australia who is knitting things out of yarn from within her lady parts. The work is officially called Casting Off My Womb, but was lovingly dubbed Vaginal Knitting by an Australian TV channel. Taking place in Darwin, Australia, the performance project aims to address taboos surrounding female genitals and a womans body in general, similar to the many provocative endeavors spearheaded by Jenkins art activism group, Craft Cartel. Casey has a web page that explains her craftivist performance. Click the link to read what she has to say in her own words. Read it and come back and tell me what you think.
