WOMEN SPEAK OUT FOR PEACE! As we prepare to celebrate September 21st, International Day of Peace declared by the United Nations in 1981 in accordance with resolutions 36/37 of the United Nations General Assembly, we hope and pray that Cameroon is not left aside due to the fact that on one hand some of its neighbouring states are in constant conflicts that can undermine its security, and on the other hand, the pre-election period, which, if poorly managed, is likely to trigger latent or open conflicts. We are sending you this message as part of the Global Campaign on the theme: "Women Speak Out for Peace" initiated by Global Network of Women Peacebuilders, network to which we belong. This campaign, which goes from September 16th – 21st, has among other objectives to emphasize the role of women as peacemakers and agents of change, and to demand greater accountability on the resolutions on Women, Peace and security. In 2000 the Security Council of the United Nations formally recognized the disproportionate impact of war on women by adopting Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and its supporting resolutions at global level. The International Day of Peace 2013 is celebrated under the theme "Education for Peace". The campaign "Women Speak Out for Peace" requires the mobilization of all as the UN Secretary General rightly reminded in his message 100 days before the Peace Day. " It is not enough to teach children how to read, write and count. Education has to cultivate respect for others and the world in which we live, and help people forge more just, inclusive and peaceful societies. " He called on Governments, parties in conflict, religious institutions, community leaders, media, academics and civil society to send a helping hand in setting up education programs for peace and give girls and boys quality education that will teach them how to resolve and prevent conflict. In this regard, the organization Women Peace Initiatives strongly appeals for peacebuilding and reconstruction in Cameroon through a culture of peace at all levels (family, community and national). During the next 100 days, kindly spare no effort to promote a culture of universal peace. "Building Peace" is the motto that we must respect and enforce around us. Building peace means fighting poverty, the contempt for others, it is right to recognize our differences. Everything is connected. Let’s be ACTORS AND NOT MERE SPECTATORS. "Every day, together, let’s build Peace" We take this opportunity to reiterate our commitment to a lasting peace and justice. These commitments include the development of a National Action Plan on UNSCR 1325 and 1820 on Women, Peace and Security, in conjunction with the integration of peace education in formal and informal curriculum. The International Day of Peace calls us to a permanent commitment, above all interests or differences, to build and consolidate peace and to ensure full and equal participation of women in all peace processes and all decision making positions.
