WOMEN of CHARACTER: RUTH……part 4 Wisely Seeking a Husband……from Ruth 3 Ruth’s first husband had died, remember? Knowing her fondness for Naomi, we can only assume that her marriage had been a happy one. So let’s learn from someone who had walked the aisle once and was willing to do it again. There’s no man like the right man. First, a Quick Read: When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirit, he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay down. In the middle of the night something starled the man, and he turned and discovered a woman lying at his feet. “Who are you?” he asked. “ I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a kinsman-redeemer.” “The LORD bless you, my daughter,” he replied. “This kindness is the younger men, whether rich or poor. And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All my fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of noble character….” When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, “How did it go, my daughter?” Then she told her everything Boaz had done for her and added, “He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’” Then Naomi said, “Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man will not rest until the matter is settled today.” Ruth 3: 7-11,16-18 When You Think about It: Let me say this to all of you who are thinking about getting married: Donit marry anybody whom you are not able to trust with your life. Don’t marry someone unless you think they will take your hopes, your dreams, your visions, and your rights more seriously than you have yourself. If you’re seeking to get married, and you’re looking at someone who’s kind of luke-warm, someone who’s not really on fire about Jesus—if they’re around the church and they’re not really serving Him to the fullest—Paul called that trampling the Son of God underfoot (Hebrews 10:29). And if they’ll trample Jesus under their feet, they’ll trample you, too. If they can’t love the lover of their souls, they aren’t going to love you. They’re wanting to get married to you for selfish reasons. But if you can find somebody who is so in love with Jesus that they’re serving Him out of that unconditional love that He’s bred into their hearts—if you can find somebody who’s got their relationship right with Jesus, then you’ve got a good prospect for marriage. ---Stan Mitchell To be married is to have found in a total stranger a near and long-lost relative. –Mike Mason LOOK AT THIS WAY: If you still have children at home who are not yet marrying age, begin consistently praying for their wisdom in choosing a godly wife or husband when the time comes. And don’t just pray about it by yourself during your drive-time or private devotions, but pray along with them. That’s not forcing their hand toward marriage, but helping them to see how serious an impact this one choice will have on their life. And how much God loves them to be watching out for them so far in advance. CHARACTER CHECK: God can transform any marriage at any stage of the trip, and make it better than it was when it started….when we wisely seek to serve Him, and in turn to serve our husbands.
