After about a year from the previous The Earth Cries Blood, the artist behind the name The Child Of A Creek returns with two albums released in the short distance between each other. Quiet Swamps follows the path traced by the previous Find A Shelter Along the Path and precisely by the one traced with The Earth Cries Blood, Hidden Tales and Other Lullabies lies, instead, in the wake of the instrumental tracks of Whispering Tales Under An Emerald Sun (his 4th record). The man we hear in this tape, Hidden Tales and Other Lullabies, we could say it’s The Child of A Creek and at the same time he’s not, cause of the atmospheres here are those to which we have become accustomed in listening to the previous albums, but the sound it has gone away significantly, leading perhaps not yet to completion, but certainly to a point of no return, cause of the process of rarefaction shown in his recent records. Without his voice to lead us through the mist and with the guitar that rarely intervenes with good taste, we are immersed in a type of ambient, where are the piano notes, laid on carpets synth, to characterize the work: there are sketching melodies usually of a few repeated notes (listen to the beautiful “Daughter of Fortune”), or short phrases that stand out against a fluctuating background, to fade into nothingness. Just to give an idea of what it’s far from the starting point, the second half of a song called “Going Home In The Middle Of Nowhere”, interwoven by field recordings, it can remember an inspired Fabio Orsi and this thing really makes us feel at home, even if we are in the middle of nowhere. Hidden Tales and Other Lullabies could be the birth of a Child Of A Creek’s side project, but maybe its only (and it’s not cheap at all) the other side of a poetic imagination too rich to be encoded in a single path. The other new record, Quiet Swamps, sounds more folk-oriented; there are also differences, clear from the first song, if compared to the previous albums and even more to the twin homozygous Hidden Tales And Other Lullabies, which we’ve reviewed weeks time ago. In fact, almost as Hidden Tales.. has absorbed the dreamy tones and the spleen to which we were accustomed, Quiet Swamps is dry without losing introspection, accentuating rather the intimate mood and going to describe an interior landscape even more lonely and melanchonic. It’s a sound characterized by lush arrangements, but never excessive and there’s an electronica that aims with fewer shades; all help to create songs like “The Ravine” with its acoustic guitar, synths and its dronanted items or songs like “Sunset Hill” that reminds to Swans most desperate. These are examples of how the term ‘psych folk’ remains more a definition of convenience than a real reference cause Child Of a Creek runs different paths simultaneously. So, “Lost Horizons” flirts with technology and it’s a kind of space-folk, “Subterranean Life” seems to be a meeting between Current 93 and Tangerine Dream and the song called “Golden Memories” (best track of this record) is pure folk asceticism, where only a few of guitar chords, some distant percussions and a string of synthesizers support a very inspired voice. Quiet Swamps reaches the ears in a completely different way than its predecessors, while maintains clear the style of its creator and I could say it’s the most interesting album of this musician. Future developments, especially in light of the existence of the twin album Hidden Tales and Other Lullabies, are currently unpredictable. Dopo circa un anno dal precedente The Earth Cries Blood, l’artista che si cela dietro il nome di The Child Of A Creek ritorna con ben due lavori in uscita a breve distanza l’uno dall’altro. Quiet Swamps segue il percorso tracciato dai precedenti Find A Shelter Along the Path e appunto The Earth Cries Blood, Hidden Tales and Other Lullabies si colloca invece sulla scia dei brani strumentali di Whispering Tales Under An Emerald Sun; è di questo che ci occupiamo oggi. Del Child Of A Creek che ascoltiamo in questo nastro potremmo dire essere lui e al contempo non esserlo: se le atmosfere sono quelle a cui ci ha abituato l’ascolto dei dischi precedenti, il suono se ne allontana in modo significativo, portando forse non ancora a compimento, ma certamente a un punto di non ritorno, il processo di rarefazione che alcuni accenni nei dischi più recenti avevano suggerito. Senza più la voce a guidarci nelle nebbie avaloniane e con la chitarra che interviene con gusto ma raramente, ci troviamo immersi in un ambient dove sono le note di piano, posate su tappeti di synth, a caratterizzare il lavoro; lo fanno tratteggiando melodie, in genere di poche note ripetute (la bellissima Daughter of Fortune) o brevi fraseggi che si stagliano su uno sfondo fluttuante, per poi sfumare nel nulla. Giusto per dare un’idea di quanto si sia distanti dal punto di partenza, la seconda metà di Going Home In The Middle Of Nowhere, intessuta di field recordings, può ricordare il Fabio Orsi più ispirato e davvero ci fa sentire a casa, anche se siamo nel mezzo del nulla. Album del perdersi cercato e definitivo, Hidden Tales and Other Lullabies potrebbe benissimo essere il parto di un progetto collaterale a Child Of A Creek, ma forse è solo (e non è poco) l’altra faccia di un immaginario poetico troppo ricco per codificarsi in un unico percorso. Il secondo album di The Child Of A Creek a uscire nel giro di poche settimane si innesta sul solco dei dischi dell’artista toscano più orientati al folk; non mancano però le differenze, chiare fin dal primo brano, rispetto ai lavori precedenti e ancor più rispetto al gemello omozigota Hidden Tales And Other Lullabies, di cui vi abbiamo detto tempo addietro, come se l’ispirazione del nostro si fosse sdoppiata e procedesse su sentieri sempre più divergenti. Infatti, quasi che Hidden Tales… abbia assorbito i toni sognanti e lo spleen ai quali eravamo abituati, Quiet Swamps si presenta asciutto senza perdere introspezione, accentuando anzi la vena intimista e andando a descrive un paesaggio interiore ancora più solitario e malinconico. È dunque un suono caratterizzato da arrangiamenti curati ma mai eccessivi e da un’elettronica che si propone con meno sfumature, tutti elementi che contribuiscono a creare brani come The Ravine, per chitarra acustica, synth dronante e voce, o una Sunset Hill che ricorda gli Swans più disperati, esempi di come il termine psych folk rimanga più una definizione di comodo che non un effettivo riferimento: Child Of A Creek batte strade diverse, contemporaneamente. Così Lost Horizons flirta con la tecnologia ed è una specie di space-folk, Subterranean Life sembra, a tratti, un incontro fra Current 93 e Tangerine Dream e Golden Memories, il brano migliore, è puro ascetismo folk dove solo poche corde di chitarra, qualche percussione lontana e un filo di sintetizzatori, supportano una voce ispiratissima. A parole è difficile rendere le differenze, ma Quiet Swamps arriva all’orecchio in modo completamente diverso rispetto ai predecessori, pur mantenendo chiaramente lo stile del suo creatore. Forse il filone si era esaurito, forse era semplicemente tempo di cambiare, ma questo appare di gran lunga l’album più interessante del musicista.
