WOOHOO - THE MEDIA RELEASE WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR..... Breaking news.... CAG recommends QE2!! Hi everyone, I’m delighted to let you know that the community advisory group formed to recommend the site for a new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre in north east Christchurch has now finalised its recommendations for a preferred site for the facility. We’ve had some very productive meetings since we formed in June and we’re satisfied we’ve followed a robust process to make an informed decision. On Thursday 14 August, we agreed to recommend a proposed site at QEII as our preferred site for the new recreation and sport centre. Sites identified, investigated and ranked in order of preference included Rawhiti Park (second), New Brighton (third equal), Burwood Park (third equal), Cuthberts Green (fifth equal), Clare Park (fifth equal), Aranui Campus (fifth equal) and Prestons Development (eighth) The next step is for the advisory group to report to the Burwood/Pegasus Community Board on 1 September with its suggested recommendation and then the Board will report to the Council on 11 September. The Council has final sign-off on the preferred site. As you aware from our previous newsletter, we agreed potential sites would be assessed against a range of 10 criteria. QEII has been chosen as our preferred site for the new recreation and sport centre for a number of reasons, including its accessibility, impact on social wellbeing and the size of the site, which will allow the facility to grow over time if necessary. The advisory group includes representatives from eight community and sport organisations – Youth Alive Trust, Rawhiti Community Sports Inc, Aranui Community Trust Incorporated Society (ACTIS), Tumara Park Residents’ Association, Avondale Residents’ Association, Coastal Spirit Football Club, Keep QEII in the East and Eastern Vision. In June 2012, the Council agreed an Eastern facility should be built on the QEII site, or an agreed alternative location, to replace the damaged QEII Sport and Recreation Centre. A budget of $30.5 million has been allocated to the Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre in the 2012/13 Annual Plan and subsequently brought into the Christchurch City Three Year Plan (TYP). The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust has also given $6.5million for water attractions at the facility. Andrea Cummings Burwood/Pegasus Community Board Chair
