WOOW!!! SNOW IN WESTERN AUST!!!! A wicked blizzard brings snow to western OZ Max Gonzalez, Monday July 7, 2014 - 13:24 EST Winter usually brings quite a lot of weather to our neighbours in southwestern WA, where about 1.8 million of Australians live. So far this winter has been pretty active with consecutive fronts brushing the South West Land Division, but something is not the same with todays front as it has the potential to cover in white a region which rarely sees snow. For anyone in the eastern states, today might be one of those few days were we direct our sight to the western skies in daze. The front itself is powering through as we speak, with wind gusts already being recorded this morning of up to 124km/h in Cape Naturaliste and 80km/h at Rottnest Island. Damaging winds will extend further inland (including the metro area by midday) and persist throughout the afternoon with winds likely to reach 60-70km/h in Perth and with gusts to about 125km/h. The most particular feature of this system is the air mass in its wake, which is looking to bring a taste of Antarctica with snow being a good chance over the far south. Snow on the Stirling Ranges is not unusual, as every winter sees occasional snowfalls which bring some dusting to the higher peaks. Bluff Knoll, the highest peak in the ranges is 1099 metres above sea level and the only place in Western Australia that sees regular winter snowfalls. Back in 1992, a snow storm brought 20cm of snow which fell as low as 450 metres. Hail and thunder will also be a feature with this system, mainly on its wake and along the western south coasts. Although southwesterly winds will remain fresh-to-strong tomorrow they will gradually ease with a high bringing lighter winds and clear skies on Wednesday. For once, the snow could glow white on the mountain high tonight with not a footprint to be seen. - Weatherzone © Weatherzone 2014 weatherzone.au/news/a-wicked-blizzard-brings-snow-to-western-oz/94346
