WORD FOR THE DAY: Word - speech as distinct from action, a single distinct conceptual unit of language, something that someone says or writes, term, expression, utterance, promise, assurance, vow, oath, bond. “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was GOD.” John 1:1 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” John 1:14 QUOTE FOR THE DAY: “The deafening silence of our religious leaders...” Congressman Charles Rangell, New York (D) Monday morning CNN interview - 12/22/14 CHALLENGE OF THE DAY: If you had an absolute limit of 100 spoken words per day, each one of which you would be held 100% accountable for, how wisely would you choose your words? Now 50 words, now only 30. How many calls would you refuse or ignore? How much more might you think before you speak or rather than speak? RANT FOR THE DAY: The vigorous defense of Freedom of Speech provided by the First Constitutional Amendment risks the illusion that free speech is absolute and absolutely just. If I possessed the skill sets needed to hack I might have hacked a publisher or film studio after reading Grisham’s “A Time To Kill” or watching Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” for what I felt was their flagrant use of the word N----r. I can’t imagine members of the Jewish community defending free speech when and if the language is decidedly antiSemitic. A journalist was recently apologetic for her insensitive criticism of the daughters of the President and First Lady. NYPD officers are openly offended by the Mayor’s remarks and protesters calls for “dead cops.” As an artist, I am among the first to defend freedom of speech and expression; however, if sensitivity and decency is deemed censorship, there may be times and places for its application in varying degrees. “Part of me is broken, from all the harsh words spoken, I never thought that we would come to this” “Whoever said that words don’t hurt like sticks and stones, has never been in love.” “TOUCH” M. Jaye if you’ve never read the First Amendment, take a look. Interestingly it touches on a wide breath of today’s most challenging issues including what you say on social networking, the right to protest and the challenge of government for redress or remedy of grievances. Powerful stuff! First Amendment - U.S. Constitution: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. OUTTAKES FOR THE DAY: In his Christmas message to Vatican officials the Pope spoke of the harmful, hurtful and intoxicating effects of “gossip.” Keep striving for love and peace! M
