WORK INEXPERIENCE To be frank, these words have become all too - TopicsExpress

WORK INEXPERIENCE To be frank, these words have become all too familiar to me this year than all the others combined. Not a day passes by without hearing 2 or more fresh college grads lamenting about how they are going to get a job at this pace. it quickly reminds me what a good friend of mine, Harry, wrote last month on his status update. he said and I quote, I am thinking if I were to establish a private college that would be offering certificates or diplomas in work experience, I would become one of the top richest people in the world. This got me thinking, is it not possible for one to graduate with both of these? I looked at the time invested in the practical aspect of our different programs that we study for in our colleges and realized that most of us got industrial exposure once or twice during the academic journey to getting our certificates/diplomas/degrees. And thats even mostly so because its for academic purposes and one has to write a report and submit to the learning institution they enrolled with as part of their assessment. But do we really have to gain only 1 or 2 months of industrial exposure at the end of 2 - 4 years of study? I dont think so. How about once someone decides the career path that he/she wants to take, they get a referral letter from their academic Institution which they can use to apply for voluntary internship/attachment at a company/ organization/ institution relative to their career path? such that whenever the student is on holiday, he/she goes to where they were accepted to practice what they are learning and even learn more from them. Its a win-win scenario. much as the combined period of actual work experience may not be 2 or 3 or 4 years, the CV will still say you have 4 years experience in your field of expertise. And thats got to count for something during job search. Some of us lost our chance of doing this while we were still scholars, but lets encourage those that still have it, to do so. Nobody handsout work experience, it is earned. Ian (2014)
