WORLD HORSE WELFARE said to NHTEC in NOV and DEC 2013 in regards to CHOICE 1. From a welfare perspective we can see no reason why bitless bridles should not be accepted into competition. 2. We believe that whether a bridle is bitless or bitted, the most important consideration for horse welfare is that it is the right tack for that horse. 3. We do not consider bitted bridles to be an inherent welfare problem, nor bitless bridles necessarily always to be more welfare-friendly. 4. Clearly if bitless bridles are to be accepted into competition, then the sport governing bodies would need to regulate which bridles should be allowed, as there are examples of bitless bridle that could constitute a welfare issue due to the leverage and pressure applied to the horse’s nose, jaw and poll areas. NHTEC like this statement and we particularly like where WHW SAY WE BELIEVE THAT WHETHER A BRIDLE IS BITLESS OR BITTED, THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION FOR HORSE WELFARE IS THAT IT IS THE RIGHT TACK FOR THAT HORSE and we also like FROM A WELFARE PERSPECTIVE WE CAN SEE NO REASON WHY BITLESS BRIDLES SHOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED INTO COMPETITION... Why do the equestrian associations struggle with points 1 and 2? Its crystal clear is it not?. CHOICE MEANS THERE IS NO INHERENT WELFARE PROBLEM IN BRIDLES- ITS QUITE SIMPLE/
