WORLD WAR Z Brad Pitt produces and takes the lead role in what is basically a zombie film which is billed as an epic but ultimately is the poor relation of 28 Days Later, I am Legend and even Contagion. Indeed, Contagion is closer to what the novel by Max Brooks dictates with a juxtaposition of individual stories. Instead, the focus is set firmly on Brad Pitt playing UN Investigator Gerry Lane; a new character added to the screenplay, charged with saving The World from the pandemic. Indeed, it is the adaptation of the novel to a screenplay to a film which is where the roots of the tree began to decay. There were multiple screenplay writers on this project, notably including Damon Lindelof (Lost, Prometheus, Star Trek Into Darkness) which diluted the potency of the film in my opinion coupled with the fallout of the Director Marc Forster and Pitt. Anyway, back to the film. The film obviously has a larger budget than 28 Days Later and Pitt is transported across the globe to try and find the source of the pandemic. We get to see how different countries react to their individual zombie nations. A standout is Israel which has built massive walls around Jerusalem and this is keeping the zombies out; they have been proactive. Calm before the storm. The rest of the World is in chaos. One anomaly is that the zombies ignore certain people, which is pivotal to the plot. The zombie are languid except when they are in a feeding frenzy where the panoramic camera shots do justice to the horror and is the only sense that this film is epic. Talk of a trilogy is hinted at in the movie but if you think I am going to sit through 4-6 hours of more of this tired and old material, you are sadly mistaken.
