WORSHIP SONG for THURSDAY – Today we celebrate the United States’ 237th birthday and as we do we also celebrate the concept of freedom that was and is foundational to the American way of life. Our founders conceived and established a nation founded on those “certain inalienable rights that our Creator endowed upon every person.” The right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Are we a perfect nation? Oh, far from it! Do we have a vast array of needs and problems? Of course! But have we been and are we blessed by God Almighty, the One the founders attributed this county’s very existence on? YES we are blessed! And still to a great degree we are free! Free to, within the bounds of the law, pursue a life of personal goals, desires and aspirations. Free to travel, free to buy and sell and free to vote our conscience. And even though we have lost some personal liberties for safety sake and even though we often have leaders who mis-represent us, the situation exists of more people wanting to get into our country than want to get out. I’m thankful for America and thankful to God for His blessings, especially the blessing of freedom. And when I think of freedom, I think of the ultimate freedom Christians have in the Lord Jesus Christ. We are free from the penalty of our sin because Jesus took it upon Himself at the cross. We are free from the condemnation of a just and holy God because of our rebellion against Him and He has declared us righteous upon our receiving Christ as Savior. We are free from the treadmill of performance toward God, knowing that it’s faith and faith alone that pleases Him. Jesus said that the one who is made free by the Son is “free indeed!” Are you free? You might say, “of course, I live in America the land of the free!” That’s great! And although that is a great measure of freedom, it pales in significance when compared to the ultimate freedom we have in Christ. Consider His claims, accept His promises and freedom will be yours....forever!
