WORSHIP SONG for TUESDAY - As a Follower of JESUS and student of the Bible, one of my spiritual heroes is John the Baptist. His story, although shadowed within the prophecies of the Old Testament is primarily found in the early parts of the New Testament Gospels. In a sense, John had one assignment - introduce JESUS the Son of God to the world and then....recede into the background of history. As God prepared both John and Jesus for prime time, the Baptizer had built up quite a ministry and had a large following. He was a ruff and tumble preacher, living in the wilderness, wearing animal skins for clothes and living on a diet of locusts and wild honey. He spared no words for the crowds that came to hear him preach and it seems that his favorite word was REPENT! He didnt have times for those that wouldnt but those that did were baptized as a picture of their repentance and acceptance of the One John preached about. One day a recognizable figure came walking through the crowd toward John and presented Himself to be baptized - amazingly it was JESUS! As John saw Him, he exclaimed, Behold the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world! John tried to baptize Jesus, for he felt unworthy to even untie his sandal but Jesus insisted and John was obedient. The voice of the Father thundered from heaven and the Holy Spirit manifested Himself as a way of confirming Johns declaration about the Christ and the public ministry of Jesus was fully underway. Many of Johns disciples then left him to walk with Jesus and the crowds soon followed also. The few remaining ones felt sad for their teacher and shared with John their disappointment. But John would have none of it as he made the statement he is well known for....HE must increase but I must decrease! Would to God that all the Followers of Jesus all over the world would make that their goal - less of us and MORE of HIM!
