WOULD YOU? Beloit, WI-- police asking residents to VOLUNTEER their homes to be searched for guns. The volunteer phase, of course, usually prefaces the MANDATORY phase. If I want to ascribe a benevolent motive to the police (and I do), its that they hope parents invite cops in to find their childrens guns while the boys and girls are away at school or some such. It would be nice to think that is something police thought of that would help frustrated parents in high crime neighborhoods. But the bottom line is, this scheme is as easy to defeat as any other. All it takes is for friends to agree to move guns from house to house, and volunteer the gunless house for a search. Then, when search is over, move the guns THERE and volunteer ANOTHER gun-free house for search. The whole neighborhood could be magically cleared of guns -- at least as far as the police report goes. Then, politicians will be able to wave the paper and brag about results. And when gun crime goes UP instead of down, the politicians will blame the gun supply on gun stores, in Wisconsin and other nearby states, as Eric Holder tried to falsely blame the gun stores in Texas when his secret scam of Fast and Furious started raising border crime rates. If not for a couple of whistleblowers, even today we might still be experiencing the gun store crackdown that Holder dreamed of when he implicated them in a gun distribution scheme that HE INVENTED AND CARRIED OUT. If you think the anti-gun side, INCLUDING high ranking police leaders (who are after all politicians), are willing to remain honest and constitutional in their efforts to ban guns in America, think again. Anti-gun politicians willing to be dishonest can do a lot of things. They can arrange to plant guns in adversaries homes with serial numbers that lead to gun stores in the area, so they can accuse them of irresponsibly selling. They can visit political adversaries who know there are no guns in their homes, and find guns there, guns with serial numbers filed off, guns that implicate the adversaries. Police here can do a lot of things. They can discover a gun that wasnt there, and in that way they can unjustly bring consequences on a person theyve always wanted to harm but never caught them doing anything. What a marvelous way to settle a grudge, if youre a bent cop. The possibilities are endless, once the search becomes mandatory. And it will, if there are any positive results they can show from it. But the worst part is, the police and politicians will just be played by the REAL problem people; I mean the bad guys who dont intend to give up their guns and are laughing at police for this stupid idea, because its so easy to fool them with it. This does NOTHING to make residents safe, and it will establish a set of new norms that will lead to the next authoritarian step, and the next-- When searches can happen WITHOUT your permission. When EVERYONE will be searched. But dont lose sight of the fact that it is also a police response to being hamstrung and being targeted by federal government. They are desperate to do SOMETHING about high crime areas that doesnt bring 16 tons of feds down on their heads. Regular old law enforcement is just not safe for cops anymore.
