WRC: Latvala getting stronger and stronger - Jost Capito says the WRC “experienced the best Jari-Matti Latvala of all time” on Rally Finland last weekend Volkswagen motorsport director Jost Capito believes Jari-Matti Latvala is “getting stronger and stronger” and he has predicted there will be lots more great fights between the Finn and team-mate Sebastien Ogier. Latvala took a brilliant victory last weekend on Rally Finland, and despite a scare on Saturday afternoon, when he damaged the brakes on his Polo R WRC and almost lost the lead to Ogier, he hung on and eventually won by 3.6 seconds. It was Latvalas second Rally Finland win and his third of the 2014 WRC season, a result that keeps his admittedly slim championship hopes alive. Latvala is currently 44 points behind Ogier with five events remaining. “It was a fantastic performance. He [Jari-Matti] was fastest from the start and he deserved to win this rally,” said Capito. “We see him get stronger and stronger. “Last year he was lacking some testing and he was still getting used to the Polo R WRC and getting used to it on different rallies. We expected him to get stronger. He is where we believed and where we thought he would be. “I am sure we will see lot of great rallies and fights to the end of the season – what we have seen here is the best rallying has to offer.” “To my knowledge, theres no one in the service park who doesnt think Jari-Matti and Miikka [Anttila – his co-driver] deserved this emotional home victory, he added. Im especially delighted for them because they worked hard for this success and achieved it on the basis of immense willpower – in spite of some minor setbacks. “We experienced the best Jari-Matti of all time, with an entirely new attitude towards rallying – highly focused, but relaxed at the same time. He was in his own world.”
