WRITING IS AN ART, PRACTICE IS A FACT By Gabriel Dinda No one will talk of ‘practice makes perfect’ here because I will be miserable should I be perfect today. That notwithstanding, some facts stand the test of time. Writing is one area where one is judged by the end product not the ingredients of cooking. Here, we are judged by the precision of our most recent article. As an art, we are required to deliver on the assertions we make, refer to the allusions we bake and prove on the thoughts we create. Any serious writer is therefore required to be consistent in practice, persistence on course and repetitive on passion; Let us pick it from here; there are many side activities we do which give an aromatic taste to our writing on a great scale; Look at these for instance: (i) WHAT DO YOU READ: This is perhaps the millionth time you are hearing of this: a writer is a reader. Therefore, any serious writer should be afraid when dusk engulfs without passing through an article. Get it from anywhere, get a random magazine, flip through the pages, get a shared link, scrub it through, no one said you read page by page, just make it convenient and consistent. (ii) SIMPLE PRACTICE: When we text, chat or update our status(es), do we stop at the grammar or even the language we use?? A writer, will require to include all the literary styles; those as of, irony, sarcasm etc in their posts and comments. When this is done, we sharpen our art unconsciously. We create our brand as well (read Mwalimu Andrew). We get better by the day (iii) WRITING RELATED EVENTS: How may public book readings sessions, poetry performances or writing forums have you attended lately. We replenish our passion by attending such events. Every time I attend events of that nature, I get so challenged and purpose to do better. Give it a try. (iv) DO NOT SPECIALIZE: ‘What do you write?’ …I write romance..mmh!!. I am not sure if that is a good strategy for now. I know the power of specializing in an area but I also know the power of diversity. Let’s take a middle ground here, read everything, write anything. For any writer, who keeps texting in broken language, that who is so economical in reading other’s pieces, that who writes on a monthly[period] basis and still expects to take the writing industry to its knees, ooh no, that is so ambitious. Make it a habit, on a daily basis, grow the culture, embrace the art, reap the fun. ‘When I started, most people never saw the sense in writing. Today, they have touched and talked with ‘the sense’-Ust. Wallah bin Wallah. @olewedinda.
