WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! You know what we should all do? People should just stop tipping altogether! Shame on employers who take advantage and shame on employees for getting themselves into a situation where their income is dependent not on showing up and working every day, but rather the generosity of others. Same with the whole service industry... these are JOBS - you do a job, you should get paid by the person who hired you to do the job, not tipped (and relying on that income to live!) by the person for whom you did the job. A court with real wisdom would outlaw the practice of tipping altogether. You want to show your thanks for great service, say thank you, write a thank-you note, make a recommendation to the boss that they receive a bonus, and asked to be served by that waiter next time you dine there.
