WWAMI Wyoming 2013 Med Student Roberta Enes is doing her Summer 2014 Global Health Emersion Project (GHIP) in Uganda, Africa. This is what she said about her experience so far: So far I am enjoying my experience in Uganda. We are getting the opportunity to work in Kampala, Uganda with the Uganda Cancer Institute. This facility is the sole treatment center for all of Uganda and Rwanda. Outside the facility we are traveling around the country to deliver cancer education to a population that is for the most part lacking any knowledge of the subject. We set up shop in a local church, use their barbershop for pelvic exams and the pastors office for breast exams. We do our best to screen for and catch cancers before they are advanced. By the time most of our patients come for care it is too late for more than palliative treatment. When we are not on outreach I am working on a project to decrease hospital acquired infections in the immuno-suppressed patients by implementing hygiene practices amongst the resource limitations (note the picture of us making cotton swabs from a roll of cotton and some sticks). In between our work days we are getting a chance to explore the country. We recently went to the Zoo in Entebbe and next weekend will be a traditional wedding. I find myself humbled, thankful, hopeful, and changed, and my eyes are open to a world far beyond what I could ever have imagined. I am incredibly grateful that I received the opportunity to come here and I believe this experience will change me and the way I practice medicine for life.
