WWII veterans and philanthropists, the Rats of Tobruk are passionate supporters of the RCH. Every year, their generosity funds an RCH Neuroscience Fellow named in their honour. Today, the Rats of Tobruk visited the RCH to officially name the 2014 Neuroscience Fellow, Dr Lakshminarayanan (Lakshmi) Kannan. During his time in this role, Lakshmi has worked with RCH patients with complex epilepsy and is a liaison for the many hospital staff involved in a patients’ care. Each patient is unique, so Lakshmi compiles info on their condition to help the team make the best decision for treatment. One of the main sources of info is video-EEG monitoring, where video and EEG data are recorded during seizures. “This helps us correlate what happens with the brain’s electrical activity during the seizure,” says Lakshmi. “I coordinate the dynamic clinical decisions between neurologists, EEG scientists and the patient’s families during the inpatient video-EEG monitoring.” This information is reviewed in conjunction with examination findings, imaging and other clinical investigations. Lakshmi then presents the patient info package at a weekly meeting attended by RCH neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, neuropsychology and allied health staff. The team then works together to make recommendations for further investigation or treatment options, including brain surgery. “I help put the pieces of the puzzle together,” says Lakshmi.
